With the release of InfraWorks (2020.1), it’s time to give you an update about where we are and where we are headed. Let us know what you think!
First things first: This roadmap may make statements regarding future events and development efforts for our products and services. These statements reflect our current expectations based on what we know today. Our plans are not intended to be a promise or guarantee of future delivery of products, services or features and purchasing decisions should not be made based upon these statements. We do not assume any responsibility to update this roadmap to reflect events that occur or circumstances that exist after the publish date of this roadmap.
We are always excited about each new InfraWorks release (it’s like a quarterly festival!) but this release (2020.1) is a special cause for celebration! InfraWorks 2020.1 contains many new enhancements that you have requested, and tools that enable workflows not only with other products and services in the AEC collection but also even beyond that, reaching out into the GIS world. Therefore, I am excited to announce the InfraWorks 2020.1 release which is packed full of powerful features for civil infrastructure design, modeling, analysis, and presentation. The install is available via the accounts (manage.autodesk.com) and Autodesk Desktop App (ADA).
This release includes features like:
- Multi-user license support
- Complete round trip workflows between InfraWorks and ESRI ArcGIS, including new Publish to ESRI ArcGIS functionality
- Brand new look and feel
- Alignment and profile updates from Civil 3D
- And many more!

To better explain the roadmap, we’ve grouped our plans by theme:
- Create – The act of model creation
- Efficiently create models that better capture design intent
- Engage in a delightful, intuitive, and contextual experience
- Model to higher degrees of accuracy and detail
- Connect – Integrating teams and products
- Connect project teams with AEC-focused collaboration tools
- Enable multidisciplinary workflows to help deliver projects
- Extend BIM to all phases of the project lifecycle
- Optimize – Better buildings and processes
- Analyze, simulate, and iterate to optimize designs
- Work more productively with software that automates tasks
- Have more time to design with more reliable and efficient software
We use themes, colors, and icons to keep track of the roadmap details.
This theme is about creating project data at any point in the project lifecycle and the overall user experience of creating and aggregating content in InfraWorks.
For organizations that use network licensing, we have exciting news! InfraWorks now supports multi-user network licensing as of the InfraWorks (2020.1) release. As a contract administrator or software administrator, you may have to recreate the license file to include InfraWorks into that license repertoire, but this one-time action should let you enjoy multi-user license for InfraWorks in sync with other AEC products. You can get more information at this Autodesk Knowledge Network (AKN) location.
For the past year, we have been working on the Autodesk Connector for ArcGIS, which provides planners with easy access to their organization’s GIS data. It all started with the release of a simple connector that allowed you to bring ArcGIS Online data into InfraWorks, and now we are happy to report that the feature has matured significantly to the point where you can now use the Save Back and Publish to ArcGIS tools to round trip your infrastructure data between InfraWorks and your ArcGIS online Portals. This will help encourage usage of GIS data in InfraWorks planning and design workflows, but we won’t stop there – we plan to continue to enhance these capabilities to address your needs.
For Civil Structures designers, we have continued to enhance bridge workflows in InfraWorks and have improved the ability of InfraWorks bridges and tunnels to interact smoothly with Civil 3D and Revit. It is in our planned roadmap to enhance the level of details for bridges including parametric bridge and tunnel content that you create in Autodesk Inventor.
The Connect theme emphasizes the importance of connecting project teams and creating better multi-product workflows. Our goal is to improve the processes in which you collaborate and exchange information to get things done. In this area, we focus on building better experiences for sharing data across Autodesk tools as well as across the industry.
The Autodesk Connector for ArcGIS has matured to the point that we now have complete two-way data flow between InfraWorks and ArcGIS Portals, supporting industry-standard GIS data to flow into InfraWorks models bringing BIM + GIS into reality. We plan to continue development to make sure that workflows are seamless and can handle other layers types you may need from your ArcGIS Portals.
For civil infrastructure designers, we added significant new data exchange capabilities to this release, taking a big step forward in how we can exchange data between Civil 3D and InfraWorks using the Reimport command in InfraWorks. Road designers can now bring in alignments from Civil 3D which we think represents a big step forward. This enables designers to continue their work on either product with ease while exchanging the roadway design data back and forth between InfraWorks and Civil 3D. Another big enhancement we have made, on the civil structures front, was the “Send to Revit” workflow, which now offers improved Revit project template setup.
Through the Optimize theme, we’re looking for opportunities that enable you to do MORE and do it BETTER. In other words, improving the ease and productivity with which you can work, while also helping you work towards delivering better models.
As part of our continued investments in making your day-to-day work more efficient, in InfraWorks (2020.1) we released a vastly improved and enhanced user interface as well as re-tooled our keyboard shortcuts to better support the workflows you commonly use. This functionality makes the user interface consistent with other Autodesk products, but also allows you to customize your quick access shortcuts in the new InfraWorks toolbar to suit your project needs.
In addition to user interface modernization, there are many optimization enhancements for roadway design workflows that help users working with component roads in InfraWorks. Many of these improvements have been made to the functional road components delivered with the product, while other improvements were made to specific parts of the roadway design interface – enhancements that are intended to streamline your roadway design workflows. We plan to continue to focus on roadway design to help your workflows be as streamlined and complete as possible.
Another interesting topic we are focusing on is enhancing our Mobility / Traffic Simulation capabilities to help you create roads and simulate traffic for real-world conditions.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
There are a variety of other discussions and work related to connecting workflows from design to modeling and beyond along with focused efforts towards road design, site design and API work. If you don’t see something listed here, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t on our radar. If you have specific suggestions for ways we can make the product better, we encourage you to submit them to the InfraWorks Ideas site for our consideration.
If you would like to provide feedback on these capabilities, we would be happy to consider your participation in our beta program (InfraWorks Rolling Sandbox). Reach out to us directly to request to join InfraWorks Rolling Sandbox and we will review your request.
We continue to post updates periodically, and your feedback helps! Let us know what you think.
